One of Wales’ biggest ever renewable energy investments takes vital step towards delivery
find out more >Awel y Môr Offshore Wind Farm has won government support and is now moving towards construction and a final investment decision, having been successful in Contracts for Difference Auction Round Seven.
The Awel y Môr Offshore Wind Farm is being developed by RWE on behalf of project partners for an area of seabed to the west of the existing Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm; at its nearest point, approximately 10.5km off the Welsh coast in the Irish Sea.
The project secured its necessary marine licences and a development consent order in 2023
Once completed it will generate power equivalent to the needs of more than half of Wales’ homes, as well as creating opportunities throughout its construction, operation, and eventual decommissioning phases.
RWE is the UK’s leading energy generator and also the biggest renewable energy operator in Wales, with more than 20 years’ experience in offshore wind. We generate one third of all of Wales’ renewable electricity from our offshore and onshore wind farms as well as our hydro sites.
We also run our highly-regarded UK wind turbine technician apprenticeship scheme – right here in north Wales – in conjunction with Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, based at their new multi-million pound engineering centre in Rhyl.
In February 2017 The Crown Estate invited operators of existing UK offshore wind farms for expressions of interest regarding the possible extension of their projects. including Gwynt y Môr.
In January 2026 the project secured a route to market, its Contract for Difference, as part of Auction Round 7, and is currently working towards its Final Investment Decision (FID)
The Awel y Môr project then entered development and, after extensive consultation and a six-month Examination process, received consent from UK Government in September 2023, with its necessary marine licences awarded soon after by Natural Resources Wales on behalf of the Welsh Government.
